leaving the lava...

today i'm off the island, heading back to seattle. it's amazing to me what a world of good a week of sunshine and warmth can do for a girl in the middle of a northwest winter. i feel incredibly lucky to count hawaii as a home away from home. i took countless photographs, hung out with some really good friends, drank some great kona beer, shot a wedding, swam with turtles, and watched lots of winter whales breaching. i'll post photos soon of lee and andrea's simple but elegant hawaiian wedding, and a couple from the most white sandy/aqua marine beach ever. aloha, .b.

a valentine video...

the magic hours...

i'm not really a morning person. anyone that knows me can attest to that. i recently showed another photographer some travel photos and he critiqued me for not having more photos that represented the magic hours. (i.e. morning light) so while here in hawaii i resolved to get up before the crack of dawn and make some photographs. i have to say that i'm pretty pleased with the results. here's to rising to the opportunity to always reinvent oneself.

not so grey anymore...

i'm fortunate enough to be in hawaii for a week... shooting a wedding and multi tasking by soaking up some rays at the same time. tomorrow i embark upon a luau at the mauna lani orchid, and then it's off on a little photo road trip around the island. i'm really excited about the images i intend on making, so check back shortly for some not so typical hawaii shots.

a pretty grey day...

a lot of people have a hard time living in the northwest because of the weather. it's too grey, it's too rainy, it's too dark and depressing etc... as a photographer i have an ever increasing appreciation for light. and one of my favorite things about the northwest is the cold white winter light. it provides a soft diffused shadowless canopy for exactly the kind of photographs i love taking. just a simple thought for this pretty grey day.

My friend Adrienne was kind enough to let me photograph her this weekend. Getting your picture taken can feel really invasive at times, and I'm always so grateful for the people around me that let me point my lens at them. Her stunning eyes make her an easy subject to capture too.
